Notes and History

ME 103 is a curious omission from the original 1925 route signage, despite its low number, and in fact does not appear on maps or the official logs until around 1929. As originally designated, it ran between NEI 9 (now ME 9) at Berwick and Kittery at NEI 1 (now US 1). Surviving the Maine Great Renumbering, it was extended to York Village in 1940-1 along what was previously ME 1SH for a routing of over 26 miles. This routing persisted until 1957 when it was trimmed back to Gould Corner near Eliot and the old alignment given to new route ME 236, running from there along the Harold L. Dow Hwy to Kittery, terminating ironically at ME 103 itself (returning the favour where ME 103 terminates at ME 236). The Eliot-York termini remain today.
