Notes and History

ME 101 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Augusta at NEI 20 (now US 201) and Rockland at NEI 1 (now US 1), the incarnation of former lettered highway P. After the Maine Great Renumbering, this alignment became part of new route ME 17 and the number lapsed until 1940-1 when it was applied to the present routing from Kittery-South Berwick to the New Hampshire state line. Even at that time, however, the route was still different as it terminated early at ME 103 and did not cross the state line. The extension to cross into Dover was added in 1957; it does not appear, however, that it continues as NH 101 on the other side.
