About Floodgap Mosaic-CK

Mosaic-CK is a non-commercial derivative of NCSA Mosaic intended as a basic browser for Power MachTen and other older UNIX and UNIX-alike operating systems. It is not an official NCSA product and is not supported by them. THIS SOFTWARE IS UNSUPPORTED. NO GUARANTEES ARE MADE, NOT EVEN FOR MERCHANTABILITY OR SUITABILITY FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. • Improved progressive rendering. Images now load asynchronously when the progressive renderer is on (the default).
• Shell app for Mac OS X launches X11, gives you a dock icon, and allows Tab switching. The Xcode project is in motifmaclauncher/ for 10.4+.
• Clicking the Mosaic icon now causes an unconditional stop. Previously, it could hang if the initial start page was not answering.
• Made most file storage relative to $HOME/.mosaic and added a symlink automatically for ~/Library/Mosaic-CK on Mac OS X systems (these will be created automatically for you if they do not exist). You will need to move your hotlist, annotations and other files there if you are using one. They no longer start with a dot (e.g., move ~/.mosaic-personal-annotations to ~/.mosaic/mosaic-personal-annotations).

  NB: The only files in $HOME are .mime.types, .mailcap and .newsrc, and .mosaicpid (for compatibility).

• Preferences are now saved (to ~/.mosaic/mosaic-preferences, natch). However NCSA never finished it, and so this support is incomplete. Many of the exposed preferences do work, but some don't. Gradual improvements to come.
• URL bar and text gadgets use a slightly smaller font for more space.

• Elements can now be arbitrarily formatted horizontally. This is now exploited with support for left, right and center alignment, and table cells when "mapped" as paragraphs also work the same.

  There are some intermittent repaint bugs this can unmask with widgets (these are also in the original Mosaic but this makes it easier for them to appear). These are difficult to analyze though.

• Expanded ampersand escape and UTF-8 space with additional entities.
• Initial support for Windows-1252.

• Updated support for Linux (Makefile.linux). The old Linux 1.x support is now in the deprecated Makefile.linux1 target.
• Rudimentary progressive rendering. Not supported on all pages.
• Splitting the HTML renderer core. This is to allow Mosaic-CK to also act as a historical preservation by freezing the classic renderer at a close approximation to 2.7b5, the last NCSA release. However, if the alternative renderer is running (the default), then the following new features are enabled:
  • UTF-8 and Unicode entity translation to ISO-8859-1 "Latin-1" (partial)
  • <div> and <td> become block elements (for the latter, assuming Table Support is off)
  • <script> and <style> are suppressed (this was in 2.7ck7 but moved into the new renderer)
  • <?xml ...> is suppressed
• More HTML entities, in both renderer cores for efficiency.
• Optimizations enabled for targets .osx .uosx .ppcmt
• Improved network timeout code.
• Custodial code cleanup.

• Added patches for successful compilation on Mac OS X (Universal and single architecture [ppc and i386 both supported]). Tested compatible with OpenMotif 2.1.31 and up.
• Added patches for suppressing <script> and <style> tags.
• Gopher menus now format correctly, with proper itemtype i and 3 support.
• Gopher menus understand hURLs and GET requests, and translate them into URLs. The old w scheme has been removed due to security problems.
• Speaking of, multiple security flaws in gopher implementation corrected, including injection of arbitrary HTML possible through multiple vectors.
• http_proxy environment variable now correctly interpreted whether the final trailing slash is present or not.
• View Images Internally now defaults to true.
• Corrected manual links to point to the future online help system.
• Rebadged, since we're getting further and further away from the NCSA sources.
